Final decisions about equipment placement in the future Niche Modern glass studio are being considered this week. Since we have no shortage of cardboard on hand and given that it’s a helluva lot easier to move than, say, a 1,000 lbs. furnace, we thought this might be a better way to test the plan as we move the dream from schematic drawings to the real world.
Now that the concrete floors are poured, sealed and dried, framing inside the cold shop has started. We will begin sheet-rocking later this week. Then Tino and his monster truck will help us transition our cold working equipment to the future Niche Modern Glass Studio. Even on the gray days lately the natural light in the space is incredibly inspiring.
Why not cruise over to Elle Decor’s Sweepstakes today and register for a chance to win a Niche Modern Stamen Pendant? C’mon. You know you want to.
The week is over and the first pour of concrete for the future cold shop and hot shop at the Niche Modern glass studio is complete. At certain times of day, even up close, the concrete looks like water and you could almost imagine diving in. It will take a while to “cure” before heavy machinery is safe to drive on the floor but by next week Hal’s team will begin framing some walls. We’re on our way!
I don’t know who was more excited this week when the giant concrete mixer headed down the drive: Jeremy or his 4 year old son?! I have to admit we all felt a little giddy by these first steps toward the final incarnation of our beloved studio. If you’ve ever lived through a renovation that involves the construction of a new floor you can understand that once the floor is in place, everything else starts to come together quickly. This was a BIG, exciting week for the Niche Modern glass studio construction.
This is a great shot from way up high in the lift of the complex system of wire chairs, insulation tarp and tubing for the radiant floors which have all be set in place by our plumber’s team this week at the future Niche Modern glass studio. Next comes the fun part: the pouring of the concrete!
Niche Modern is proud to announce a sweepstakes with Elle Decor online! One lucky winner will score a Stamen pendant, which was the very first fixture we ever designed and became the impetus for the rest of our line. Each Stamen fixture is completely hand blown in New York and embodies the juxtaposition of our classic tubular bulbs and voluptuous curved glass. The Sweepstakes will run from today, May 4th, through July 5th. All you have to do is enter your information and you’re in for the taking! Best of luck to all of you!
Take a look at this! We’re just about ready to pour concrete into the rear section of our future hot shop. Today, we poured the first round of concrete into the back of the future cold shop. This is what a traditional radiant heating setup looks like before the pour. “Chairs” are laid down, then steel mesh is laid on top of them with radiant tubes guided throughout. The chairs, as explained in a previous post, allow for the tubes and mesh to be sealed into the center of the concrete instead of lying on the floor, optimizing heat transfer. This is an awesome way to heat the large space. Stay tuned for more on how we’re getting creative in our approach to using heat from the furnace to share some of the heating bill!
