We were so excited when Grace Bonney of the lovely Design Sponge blog told us about her first book publication and invited us to contribute images of our loft construction. After more than a year of hard work Grace finished her book: Design Sponge at Home and Niche Modern is featured at the very end with images of our 2008 massive renovation of the 19th century loft we now call home (for our family and offices) in Beacon New York. We are very happy for Grace, honored to be included and wish all of our friends at Design Sponge much continued success!

By 1917, the Ogden Packing and Provision Company, leaders of one of Utah’s most profitable industries, had expanded west of its roots into both San Francisco and Los Angeles. The end of World War 1, however, brought the booming livestock industry into a downturn, as the current output was no longer needed. At the meat-packing plant at 25 Lusk Street in San Francisco, the days were numbered. Almost 100 years later, the 15,000 sq. ft. brick building has been revived as a restaurant which heeds its ancestry in its design and function. The images speak for themselves.

What is Modern Lighting, anyway? How would an ordinary person distinguish modern design from traditional? If you can make it over to Design Within Reach’s Potrero showroom in San Francisco, you will notice a visual time line spanning the far wall of their store that pretty accurately details the birth and rise of modernism and its influence on the world of design… in other words, EVERYTHING! Furniture, architecture, technology, you name it, the wave of modernism swept over countless objects that are still in use today. Everyday objects were chiseled down to their essentials, released from the dusty closet of aging tradition. Visionaries were breaking open the shell, launching humanity into an age of endless possibilities.
Designers like George Nelson, Antonio Citterio, and Louis Poulsen, as well as architects like Louis Kahn, are the forefathers in the field of Modern Lighting, a few of which are featured in the May 2010 issue of modern design. of Design Within Reach. Discouraged by an overpriced ceiling lamp, George Nelson decided to create his own which became his landmark Bubble Lamp. Louis Kahn was known for his specific attention to light when creating his architectural masterpieces. In April 2010, DWR picked up two of our signature modern lighting pendants (Stamen and Pod) and we are proud to be amongst these giants

As the cold slowly sets back in to the tune of Halloween weekend, we’re delighted to feature the St. Regis Deer Crest Resort. Linda Snyder Associates employed our modern chandeliers, along with some of our modern pendant lights, in just the right fashion. The warm lighting and the isolation of the resort quietly enchants the weary traveler with a cozy retreat among the beautiful, snow-covered hills of Park City, Utah in the Rockies.
