Niche Modern Surpasses 20,000 Facebook Fans

Our Facebook Fan Page is now over 20000 strong!!!

Our Facebook Fan Page is now over 20000 strong!!!

Last year we began to look at Facebook as a means of reaching out to you all, specifically when we couldn’t interact with you directly as we like to do most often. Earlier this week we crossed the 20,000 Facebook fan threshold into super stardom, but more importantly, toward a deeper community. Having you all with us is starting to feel like we’re embedded within a city of our own filled with people who all think alike about lighting and its importance in the world of design, architecture and art.

Thank you all for hopping aboard the train on this journey that we’ve chosen to embark on. We honestly couldn’t do it without you, foremost. Please, share your thoughts and remarks with us here or on Facebook. And stay tuned for an eventful 2012. We love you all!

City Harvest Giveaway Winner

And now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Our end of year City Harvest sale was a phenomenal success. We managed to raise over $5000 for City Harvest, a non-profit organization dedicated to feeding the hungry.

We’d also like to announce our giveaway winner, Amanda Owens. She’s the recipient of a pendant light of her choice! Congratulations Amanda!

Nelson the Seagull

We haven’t been to Nelson the Seagull Cafe in Vancouver in person yet but from this smattering of images we get the idea of just how lovely it is and we are proud to see our Niche Modern Oculo lights featured throughout its grand interior. The photos in this post are from different sources (all credited) and perspectives. It’s a cold, rainy day in New York right now… and we’re having latte envy just posting it! Visiting Plan B

Guest post by Niche Modern team member, Meg Ford:

To many native New Yorkers, anything outside the Southwestern most parts of Connecticut can often resemble a different planet.

Thomas Hooker and Samuel Stone led a group of 100 who founded Connecticut’s capital, Hartford, in 1636; 11.5 miles Southeast sits my hometown of Glastonbury. “Glistening Town” from the Anglo-Saxon ties the community to its namesake in Somerset England, and also could be regarded as a nod to its enthusiasm for progressive design. Stone from my town’s quarry helped to build the Wadsworth Atheneum, the oldest public art museum in the United States.

Meg Imbibes Under Oculo Lights at Plan B in Glastonbury, Connecticut

Meg enjoys an evening at Plan B, a restaurant in Glastonbury, Connecticut

On a recent run back up to New England, my companion and I visited Plan B, a bar located in the center of ‘the G’ (as the town’s affectionately referred to), specializing in local beer, bourbon, and beef. Shawn Skehan opened its first location in West Hartford, and was savvy enough to realize Glastonbury, was thirsty for both quality brews, and lighting design that marries classic cool with innovative silhouettes.

Several of Niche Modern’s Oculo and Pod pendant lights glowed gorgeously in hand-blown Crimson and Chocolate glass, while we sipped our beer and I digested the thought that, in some small way, my tiny town had broken New York.

Plan B is usually packed to capacity. On a typical weekend, one can only move in increments of inches; you’ve got to hold tight to the best of luck to even make it near the bar. Fortunately, we visited on a Sunday, and things moved a bit slower and felt much more intimate under the hum of the Edison bulbs’ exposed filaments.

The latest installment of Plan B opened September 12th in Milford, welcoming the Minaret to the Oculo and Pod pendants’ party. A toast! To the best in inspired illumination found in some of the most delightfully unassuming locals.

American Eagle: Undercover Work to Capture Niche Modern’s Pod Pendants in Times Sq!

During a recent meeting in New York City’s Times Square, Niche Modern co-founder Mary Welch came out of a restaurant and realized she was face to face with one of the American Eagle stores featuring Niche Modern’s Pod Pendants! So she ducked in, whipped out her phone and started taking pictures. The staff rushed over, waving their hands and escorted her out the front door but not before she got away with this one! They looked fantastic and it was well worth it to break the rules this time…

Hospitality Design features Jeremy Pyles and Mary Welch in Profile of Niche Modern

In Hospitality Design magazine’s Products Profile, writer Jana Schiowitz pieces together the story of Niche Modern so far. The article features founders Mary Welch and Jeremy Pyles and focuses on the beginnings of the company and how it all started as an experiment, for lack of a better word. Also included is a great image drawn by young Max Pyles, son of Jeremy and Mary, of his take on Niche Modern lights, and one of Jeremy’s photographs revealing an early attraction to the subject of light. Check out our About Us page for more on the story of Niche Modern. Or pick up a copy of Hospitality Design, before the month of June is over, to read what Jana had to say! We’re delighted to be featured among the many other designers and projects featured in the HD Awards covered in the same issue.

Niche Bella Modern Pendant Light Sighting in Atlanta, Georgia

One of our employees hails from Atlanta, Georgia and on a recent return trip to her old stomping ground, she couldn’t escape the clutches of her New York employers! Oy vey!

She found herself at Holeman & Finch Public House, a gastropub located in the Peachtree Hills area of Atlanta. The restaurant flaunts a beautiful batch of our Bella Pendant Lights in their bar area. Designed by Ai3, an Atlanta-based design firm, the restaurant boasts its stance as a place where “reservations are shunned and camaraderie is exalted.” For those of us remaining up here at the Niche Modern headquarters in Beacon, New York, she thought this picture might suffice. Looks amazing!
